Oscar J. Holmes III Scholarship
Criteria

Oscar Holmes was an African-American who was proud of his own culture and generous in sharing it, respectful of the cultures of others and deeply interested in learning about them, an athlete, a playful man in the best sense of the word who overcame a great deal without losing that sense of playfulness, a resourceful man, a lover of language, a loyal and courageous friend, and a man who had a deep desire to help anyone who needed help. This scholarship is intended to support students who stand for what he stood for and to provide other students at the University of Arizona with the opportunity to know such a person as Oscar Holmes was.

For whom

A graduate of Tucson High School who is admitted to the University of Arizona (THS graduates transferring from community college are eligible, with or without Associates Degree)

Term

For first year at UA for THMS high school graduate going directly to UA or transferring to UA from a community college.

Preference is given to

  • First in family to go to college
  • African American, Hispanic-American, or American Indian heritage, sufficient to qualify under UA guidelines as "underrepresented"
  • Financial need
  • TMHS athlete
  • Major or minor in English (preferred for upper division transfer students) or in another discipline in the College of Humanities, or in History or Philosophy in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
  • Recipients of this award agree to write a letter at the end of their award year to John Warnock (if alive) and the Dean of the College of Humanities, with copies to Denise Holmes, Oscar Holmes' widow (if alive); and the THMS Badger Foundation, in which the recipient considers the difference the award has made, if any, and makes any recommendations he or she wishes concerning the process of selection and use of the award.

Selection

Recipient is to be selected by Tucson High Magnet School Badger Foundation Board from candidates nominated by THMS teachers, candidate's post-secondary teachers, or candidates themselves, with final approval by the Dean of the College of Humanities. If the Badger Foundation should be unavailable to make this selection, it shall be made by the Principal of THMS, with final approval by the Dean of the College of Humanities.
